Stellenbosch is a sporting mecca with a proud history of achievements. The scenic surroundings and mild weather conditions are conducive to both indoor and outdoor activities, making it a popular sporting destination for young and old, the adventurer and the outdoor-lover.
It is also a prime destination for international sport enthusiasts. Stellenbosch University boasts a Sport Science Department – a first of its kind in South Africa - with modern facilities, including an indoor pool.
The university squash, gymnasium, hockey, athletics and soccer facilities are at the Danie Craven Rugby Stadium and Coetzenburg Athletics Stadium.
Equally renowned for delivering many of South Africa’s provincial and national rugby players is the Matie Rugby Football Club on the banks of the Eerste River.
For both locals and visitors alike, there is a plethora of sport and activities, including golf, abseiling, mountaineering, angling, fishing, canoeing, aviation, paintball, safaris & 4x4 trails, horse-riding, mountain biking and hiking.
Sports clubs include badminton, boating, bowls, boxing, cricket, cycling, gymnastics, hockey, netball, rugby, athletics, football, swimming, squash, tennis and an equine sport centre.
For the golf enthusiast there are three championship 18-hole golf courses in Stellenbosch, namely the Stellenbosch Golf Club that has hosted many prestigious tournaments; the Devonvale golf course that offers a regular challenge to both local and international golfers, and De Zalze, with an excellent mix of parkland holes and water features. Six more golf courses are within 30 minutes drive of the town.
