A history in wine

The town of Stellenbosch dates back to 1679 and the first vineyards were planted in the same year.  The Stellenbosch Wine Route, world-renowned for its award-winning wines, was founded in 1971, making it the second-oldest wine producing region in South Africa.
The Stellenbosch Wine Routes currently provide a co-ordinated network of more than 150 wineries, each offering a unique cellar-door experience for the wine-lover and tourist.

The Stellenbosch Wine Routes include 5 sub-routes which each have their own characteristics in terms of prominent wine styles, climates and geographical location.
Food and wine lovers are treated to innovative food and wine pairings such as salt and wine; biltong and wine; cupcakes and wine; chocolate and wine; nougat and wine and much more – enquire at the Stellenbosch Visitor Information Centre.

More than wine tasting

With over 200 wine producers in the valley, this is truly the pulsating heart of the country’s wine industry, where both connoisseurs and novice wine-drinkers can equally enjoy the fruits of our vines.

Many of our cellars offer wine-tastings, tours and cellar door sales (many will ship wine right to your door), and some have restaurant and picnic facilities, accommodation, gift shops, art galleries, amphitheatres and even wildlife experiences.

Stop for wine-tasting, take a walk through the vineyards, go on a wine safari, blend your own wine and make a personalised label for your Cape Blend, or learn about the art of wine-making from the perspective of a local farmer.
