Stellenbosch prides itself in its ‘clean industry’ policy and accommodates a multitude of businesses of all categories.
Many international companies are based in Stellenbosch. Major companies include the Johann Rupert companies (Mediclinic Private Hospital Group, Distell Group; Remgro, British American Tobacco); World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF); Capitec Bank, Simonsberg Cheese and more.
Technopark Stellenbosch is a technology-focused science park, located south of the town, adjacent to the Stellenbosch Golf Club.
The Idea was originally conceived by Prof. Christo Viljoen, then Dean of the Faculty of Engineering of Stellenbosch University, following a visit to the Hsinchu Science and Industrial Park in Taiwan. The proposal was subsequently taken up by the Council in 1985 and construction on the first phase commenced early in 1987.
A number of high-tech companies in Technopark are spin-offs from research and development undertaken by Stellenbosch University, but Technopark has developed over the past few years and now features many offices and businesses alike.
