20 July 2017 [group_audience]

You won’t have to look very far to find a touch of glamour in the Cape Winelands. From award winning restaurants, to five star accommodation- for those who enjoy the finer things in life, Stellenbosch has all the ingredients for a luxurious experience. Hasmita Nair gives her tips on experiencing luxury Stellenbosch.

Where to stay:

Majeka House

If you want to stay somewhere that feels homely, yet still has all the comforts you enjoy at a 5 star hotel, look no further than Majeka House. As you can tell from the name, the boutique hotel used to be the family home of owners, Lloyd and Karine van der Merwe, who still run the hotel today, with as much passion as if it were still their own home. Rooms are equipped with wooden floors, flat screen tvs that can be operated from the bath and oversized beds with Chrysalis linen.

This is no stock standard hotel room- each suite has been uniquely and tastefully decorated, so every stay will be a different experience. The hotel’s award winning in house restaurant, Makaron prides itself on gourmet food with an African flair, with wine pairings done by a very passionate sommelier.

Where to eat:

Apart from Makaron mentioned above, there are a plethora of excellent restaurants to choose from, whether you’re after an exclusive private dining table for a special occasion, or a table overlooking sweeping views of the vineyards.

Tokara

I’m not sure what exactly contributes to Tokara being so spectacular. It could be the fact that the restaurant is perched 400 meters above sea level, showcasing panoramic views over False Bay and Stellenbosch, or it maybe it’s the fact that the restaurant itself is an architectural masterpiece, made up of a blend of contrasting elements, including glass, stone and steel.

Most likely- it’s because of the food. Uncomplicated yet sophisticated, dishes are intricately plated and intensely flavoured- resulting in an all- round experience that is truly memorable.

Warwick Wine Estate

The only thing better than a picnic is a gourmet picnic, and Warwick Wine Estate offers just that. Book online, where you’ll be able to scout out the perfect picnic spot within the estate. Upon arrival, you’ll be given a private table, blankets, umbrellas and cushions, along with an excellent variety of food.  The menu is priced at R375 and feeds two. Take your pick from more than 15 dishes, including baby potato salad tossed in olives, sundried tomatoes and fresh basil vinaigrette, and traditional smoked trout.
