Things To Do In Stellenbosch On A Student’s Budget

20 July 2017 [group_audience]

Stellenbosch is a place for indulgence, with the best food and wine and endless exciting things to do in the town and beyond. It can all add up when you're on a student budget. But here are a few fun things that everyone can do for under R100.

Hiking The Delvera Vineyard Trail

This amazing 9.75km long trail takes roughly two and a half hours to finish. The hike summit is at Klapmutskop at 523m and has the most amazing panoramic views of the Cape Winelands, Cape Town and Table Mountain. There is also a 6km vineyard walk that takes an hour and a half to complete. All hikes and walks in the area are open from 6am to 6pm and needs a permit that costs R30.

Strawberry Picking At Polkadraai Farm

One of the coolest things to do in Stellenbosch no matter what budget you’re on is going strawberry picking at Polkadraai Farm. From October to December you can head to the farm and pick up to 6.5kg of strawberries. Depending on how much you want to pick it can cost anything from R25 (800g as a junior picker), R45 (1.3kg for the harvester) to R170 (6.5kg for the ultimate picker).

Wine Tasting At Spier

If you love wine then Spiers R35 wine tasting is for you. You’ll be able to taste your choice of three of Spier’s signature range of wines and one from each of the premium wine ranges. For a few extra bucks you can try the food pairing too. The best part is that during or after your tasting you can relax in the airy lounge area, patio area or on the lush lawn.

Eat At Taste Bud Eatery

For delicious, homely food in a relaxing atmosphere, head to Taste Bud Eatery. Not only does it serve scrumptious food, but it’s all fresh, seasonal and healthy food. The best part is that it is on Stellenbosch University’s campus so the prices are extremely reasonable. A must-try are Taste Bud’s burgers, fish cakes and tarts. This restaurant serves breakfast and lunch, and is open till 5pm.

Visit Butterfly World

One of the most unique attractions of the Cape Winelands and Stellenbosch is Butterfly World Tropical Garden. This tropical garden in a huge green house is home to hundreds of free flying exotic butterflies from all over the world including Costa Rica, Philippines, Malaysia and China. A bonus is that you can spend the whole day at this amazing place for only R65! There is also an amazing on-site restaurant that serves delicious light meals.
