Medihelp Stellenbosch Cycle Tour
The Medihelp Stellenbosch Cycle Tour will take place on Sunday, 20 January 2019 and, while the start (and finish) venue has changed to Val de Vie Estate, the 102-kilometre route remains largely unchanged. It will still feature some 1285-metres of total ascent, but the major climb of the New Helshoogte Pass, which used to come shortly after the start, will now challenge riders near the end.
The rest of the route takes in the finest winelands and mountain scenery of the Boland – and offers every opportunity for a fast time and the opportunity to improve your seeding for the Cape Town Cycle Tour.
“We are delighted to announce that the Medihelp Stellenbosch Cycle Tour taking place on 20 January 2019 will start and finish at Val de Vie Estate,” said David Bellairs, Media, Marketing and Sponsorship director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust. The Western Cape’s second-largest road cycling event will once again act as the final premier seeding event for the 2019 Cape Town Cycle Tour.
“Partnering with Val de Vie is really exciting,” said Bellairs. “We are always looking for ways to innovate and improve our events and this world class venue will raise the stature of the Medihelp Stellenbosch Cycle Tour. We look forward to working with Ryk Neethling and his team who are all so passionate about the sport.”
“We’re thrilled to be hosting the Medihelp Stellenbosch Cycle Tour,” commented Val de Vie Marketing Director and Shareholder, Ryk Neethling. “Our residents lead active outdoor lifestyles, embracing all 917 hectares of natural splendour that Val de Vie Estate has to offer.”
According to Neethling there are well over 100 active cyclists who live on the estate and participate in this popular event each year. “It was a natural fit,” he said.
“The Medihelp Stellenbosch Cycle Tour is an ideal event to increase awareness for Medihelp Medical Scheme and the service and products offered”, said Heyn van Rooyen, Principal Officer of Medihelp. “The Western Cape is one of the key growth areas for Medihelp and it is important to associate the Scheme with established events such as the Stellenbosch Cycle Tour. We look forward to seeing all the cyclists at Val de Vie in January”, Van Rooyen said.
However, some might ask why it is still called the ‘Stellenbosch’ Cycle Tour if it is now hosted outside of town. Neethling has the answer. “The new bridge over the Berg River we recently completed links directly to the R45 Simondium Road and means we are 16 minutes away from Stellenbosch,” he said.
The Yard at Val de Vie Estate will play host to the event. This state-of-the-art lifestyle centre will feature an Olympic-size outdoor swimming pool, restaurant run by Reuben Riffel, 1000m² gym with CrossFit facilities as well as an ASG indoor cycling training centre and small bike shop.
