Zevenwacht Wine Estate
THE WINE CELLAR
The wines of Zevenwacht Estate are distinguishable by their finely crafted elegance and classic style. Our winemaker, Jacques Viljoen, honors the centuries-old wine-making traditions, yet is boldly innovative, welcoming the contribution that modern technology makes to the vinification of premier wines.
Covering 100 hectares of the 500 hectare property, the vineyards are ideally situated for the growing of quality grapes. Extending up the slopes of the Ribbokrant, the south and south-west facing vineyards are protected from the intense heat of summer by the Bottelary Hills and cooled by sea breezes off nearby Table Bay and False Bay. Characterized by good quality and varied soils, the vineyards have been selectively planted with red and white noble varietals.
Experience the artistry and technical skill that transform grapes into fine wine, first-hand. Visitors are welcome to tour the cellar by appointment.
Savour the pleasure of sampling wines within sight of the vines on which they grew and of the cellar in which they were produced and matured. Open seven days a week.
WINEMAKER: JACQUES VILJOEN
Jacques grew up in a Family dedicated to viticulture which established his roots in the field of viticulture and winemaking. He obtained his degree in BSc. Agriculture from the University of Stellenbosch in 2001 and completed his practical internship at Bergkelder.
Jacques joined Zevenwacht Wine Estate in 2002 as assistant winemaker until taking over the reins as Winemaker and Cellarmaster in 2005.
He finds the diverse nature of being a winemaker extremely rewarding as he gets to work with nature from the viticulture perspective, uses some physical strength and technical skills when working in the cellar, which is run with a small team, uses his creative flair in the winemaking process, and also has to waer the hat as ‘marketer’ of wines.
Jacques does not restrict himself to any single varietal but is passionate about Rhone blends and is excited about the development of the Grenache vineyards on Zevenrivieren.
He is a keen sportsman and enjoys activities where he can experience nature, such as mountain biking. He is also a family man, he is married and has two small daughters – who we believe have him safely wrapped around their little fingers.
