Stellenbosch dominates the Eat Out Top 10 Restaurant Awards

For a good many years the Eat Out Top 10 Restaurant Awards has been recognised as the top awards for restaurants in the country. Reviewers nominate 20 restaurants to be scrutinised for the top 10 by specially selected judges.

The 20 restaurants are evaluated against set criteria and at this level of the game, the smallest negative point could be the difference between being in the top 10 or not.

Of the Top 10 restaurants, 6 are in the winelands and 4 are specifically in Stellenbosch. They are:


George Jardine made a name for himself with his Top 5 restaurant in town, Jardine. But he hankered for more natural surroundings and found the perfect home at Jordan wine estate. He’s also added a more casual dining option to the Jordan offering. The Bakery offers light breakfasts and lunches featuring freshly baked bread.


Bertus Basson has been wowing diners at his restaurant on Hidden Valley wine estate for several years now. He has been venturing out into other projects but that hasn’t detracted from the quality of his offering at Overture. This restaurant probably has one of the best views of them all (although Jordan is a close 2nd).

Rust en Vrede

Initially ushered into the Top 10 through the good work of Chef David Higgs (now at Five Hundred at the Saxon Hotel) and sommelier Neil Grant (now at Burrata and Boca restaurants), this establishment on Rust en Vrede estate has managed to maintain its high standards. A small restaurant with an open kitchen, this experience is very personal.


Chef Michael Broughton is a saucier of some reputation. You will realise why when you taste the sauces which accompany the dishes served at this restaurant on Kleine Zalze estate. The central location of Kleine Zalze along with its hotel accommodation and golf course, makes this a popular restaurant. Booking is recommended.

Also making its way into the Eat Out Awards is the Restaurant at Cavalli estate, which won the Style Award sponsored by Boschendal. Henrico Grobbelaar (ex 12 Apostles Hotel) is head chef at this spectacular venue which has only recently been developed.

An additional 3 Stellenbosch restaurants made it into the top 20, narrowly missing the cut for the top 10. They will also be well worth checking out:

  • Makaron at Majeka House

  • The Restaurant at Waterkloof

  • Tokara Restaurant
